On Monday morning in Belgrade, hundreds of volunteers were out picking cigarette butts off the grass in the park across from the National Assembly. A pro-government camp had turned that park into a no-go zone for most citizens. One volunteer, Radomir Delic, described the cleanup to NPR as a chore that smelled like freedom. Vučić had conceded the night before, and the celebrating hadn’t stopped.

That same Sunday, Lula da Silva pulled off a comeback almost nobody predicted. He turns 81 today, and three weeks earlier pundits had written him off after a first-round loss. Americans vote in seven days, and these two stories matter to every one of us. They show what ordinary people can do when someone hands them a job instead of a reason to panic.

Sixteen Deaths and a Ballot Line

Serbia’s story starts with a slab of concrete. In November 2024, a canopy collapsed at a freshly renovated railway station in Novi Sad and killed 16 people. Students looked at the wreckage and saw what everyone else was afraid to say out loud: a government where nobody pays for corruption except the people who walk under its buildings. The disaster set off the protests that produced the Student List.

They kept protesting for almost two years, and then they did the unglamorous part. They built a slate of candidates, including academics, athletes, economists, and engineers, with no hierarchy and no single savior. They ran on a slogan anyone could repeat at a kitchen table: “Serbia or the mafia.” They also took the message out of the capital. Their “A Student in Every Village” drive reached more than 400 towns. A neighbor at the door can beat state television, it turns out, especially when she’s talking about safe bridges and honest contracts.

The result was a rout. Serbia’s election commission has the students at roughly 53 percent against about 39 percent for Vučić’s coalition, as reflected in the BBC’s reporting on the count. Turnout reached its highest level in more than 30 years. Projections gave the students about 138 seats in the 250-seat parliament. After 12 years running the country, Vučić conceded on election night.

Brazil Turned a Bad Night Into a Job Description

Three weeks earlier, Flávio Bolsonaro had beaten Lula in round one, 47.03 percent to 45.16, a gap of about 2.2 million votes. Lula’s reaction, as ABC Australia reported, was to declare, “Tomorrow we start a new campaign.” Young supporters poured into the streets chanting, “Bolsonaro, never again.”

Congressman André Janones then took over a WhatsApp channel called “Lula’s Army,” which already had 50,000 followers. Within three days it passed 2 million, and by election night it counted more than 10.8 million, as documented by ABC Australia and the BBC. Janones even coaxed Lula into buying his first cellphone and embracing the title “king of the selfie.” The posts made urgent, specific asks: share this, promote that hashtag, recruit a new voter. Lula’s campaign paired the digital push with concrete offers, including help for microentrepreneurs and plans to renegotiate consumer debt.

Lula finished with 51.79 percent against 48.21 percent for Bolsonaro, a margin of about 4.4 million votes, as confirmed by Brazil’s electoral court and Bloomberg’s election results tracker. CNN counted more than 10 million votes added between rounds. Abstention fell from 21.08 percent to about 19.2 percent, so more Brazilians showed up to vote.

What Two Victories Can’t Tell Us

Nobody can say how many votes a WhatsApp channel produced, and the honest reading is that street energy, digital coordination, persuasion, and an economic offer all fed each other. The winners also face real limits. Flávio Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party is the largest in both chambers of Congress, with 121 deputies and 28 senators, and Chatham House warns that Lula faces a difficult fight against conservative majorities. Bolsonaro eventually conceded after losing Trump’s backing but said he plans to sue Lula for “abusing the power of incumbency to influence the vote.” Serbia’s broad, leaderless coalition now has to turn a protest into a government.

Neither country mirrors ours, either. Serbia’s students fought a media system far more captured than anything American voters face. Brazil runs a two-round contest with compulsory voting for most adults. So we won’t copy-paste their tactics. We’ll steal the logic.

That logic shows up in the research too. A Cambridge study on pro-democracy messaging found that a positive frame improved perceptions of democratic support, while the negative version didn’t. The Carnegie Endowment warns that corruption messaging can feed cynicism and lower participation when it offers voters nothing to do. The students in Serbia named the rot in plain language and then showed up at the door. Brazil’s campaign called out the threat and promised help with debt and small businesses. Both gave people a reason to believe their vote could change something and then an assignment.

Texts work, even this late. One field experiment on text-message voter mobilization found that reminders sent a full week before an election were as effective as ones sent the day before. Here’s how to use your next five minutes.

1. Check your own plan first. Go to Vote.gov to find your state’s official election office, then confirm your polling place, your early voting dates, and your ballot return rules. They vary widely by state.

2. Pick three people. Choose people who agree with us but may not have voted yet: the cousin who says it won’t matter, the coworker who’s been slammed, the neighbor who just moved.

3. Send this text, in your own words: “Hey, I’m making sure everyone I care about has a voting plan. What day and time are you going? Need a ride, a reminder, or the official link? I’ve got you.”

4. Follow up until all three have a plan. Skip the article forwards. Offer to drive, watch the kids, or stand in line with them.

Fox News asked voters what worries them most, and corruption finished first. Eighty-eight percent feel concerned, and 60 percent feel extremely so, ahead of inflation and gas prices. Gallup found 89 percent of Americans call corruption widespread, a record high.

Voters file corruption under prices. Indivisible and Lake Research foundbattleground voters see affordability and accountability as one issue, and cost is Trump’s weakest ground: only 28 percent approve of his handling of living costs. When insiders get paid, families pay.

Hungarians drew the same line. Péter Magyar said corruption has a cost, tied it to hospitals and inflation, and called it theft. Voters gave him a two-thirds majority on record turnout. We have the power to follow his lead.

Ukrainian Families Pay in Lives

Congress passed the Lindsey Graham Act to choke off Russia’s energy revenue. On October 16, Trump waived its sanctions and tariffs, two days before its implementation deadline. On Monday, a missile and drone attack on Kyiv killed at least two people and injured 14, including three children. That same day Trump said, “Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine.”

Last week, 39 ballistic missiles hit all three of Kyiv’s heat and power plants as winter closes in. The UN counted 15,280 civilians killed or injured in the first eight months of 2026, more than 400 a week.

Follow the Money

Putin raised a multibillion-dollar sale of Lukoil’s overseas assets with Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, assets Lukoil valued near $20 billion. The buyers include Trump donor Todd Boehly and two Gulf groups tied to Witkoff and Kushner, and U.S. approval would instantly boost the assets’ value. The New York Times found no evidence Kushner or Witkoff will profit personally. They negotiate anyway, and our Trump’s Crimes on Your Dime toolkit tracks their next stop: St. Petersburg, to meet Putin.

Buyers of the $TRUMP meme coin watched most of their paper gains vanish, yet Reuters found the Trump family has taken in more than $1 billion from crypto sales. One investor in the Lukoil group co-owns World Liberty Financial, the family’s crypto venture. Voters already blame a rigged system for their high costs. That is what rigged looks like: insiders cash in while ordinary people absorb the loss.

Your Park, His Course

Trump will close East Potomac Golf Links for 15 months starting November 15 to remake a century-old public course into a championship venue. Crews cut roughly 500 trees over a holiday weekend with a lawsuit pending. Judge Ana Reyes called the cutting inexcusable and froze it through October 26. Congress created the park in 1897 “for the recreation and the pleasure of the people.” Opponents warn the makeover will make a course open to Washingtonians of all incomes less affordable.

Six to six. On Oct. 20, the Memphis City Council deadlocked on an 18-month data center moratorium. One member was absent. One vote would have changed it.

Two weeks earlier, residents had packed City Hall until the meeting collapsed into shouting, a fistfight and calls to police. They showed up. They begged. Then a single seat decided it.

The council did pass a 135-day pause. That buys a few months to study what neighbors near Elon Musk’s xAI have lived with for two years.

Meanwhile, Trump’s Justice Department tried to kill the NAACP’s Clean Air Act lawsuit over the gas plant feeding xAI’s Colossus 2. A federal judge refused to dismiss the case. The government still got a seat at the table.

A Dallas Fed paper, revised Oct. 9, estimates data centers had raised national wholesale electricity prices 6.9% by 2025. That measures the market price of power, not your exact bill. It’s the pressure behind your bill.

The Ad Campaign Taxpayers Paid For

The administration spent nearly $22 million in public money on ads promoting Trump and his policies, according to NPR’s analysis of advertising data. About $10 million was spent after October 5, when Trump said a super PAC would take over the cost. The government-funded ads kept airing. On October 11, a federal judge ordered a halt.

That money came from taxpayers who never agreed to bankroll a promotional campaign for the president. The questions now are how public funds were approved for those ads and who will be held accountable for the spending.

Presidential Medals and Trump’s Stock Portfolio

Trump’s latest financial disclosures expose another conflict-of-interest concern. Reuters reported purchases of as much as $1.6 million in Nvidia stock as Trump prepared to honor its CEO, Jensen Huang, with a National Medal of Science. At the same time, the administration was weighing chip export rules that could affect Nvidia’s business.

And according to reporting on his financial disclosures, Trump purchased between $1 million and $5 million in SpaceX debt just two days before signing a new space transportation policy. SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, has an obvious interest in federal decisions about commercial launches.

None of these disclosures shows that a medal or policy decision was exchanged for an investment. The White House says outside managers handle Trump’s portfolio. But presidential recognition, government policy and the president’s investments should not be so difficult to disentangle.

Trump Wants His Golf Course to Become a Presidential Retreat

Trump has floated turning part of his West Palm Beach golf property into a Camp David-style retreat for future presidents. Reuters reported that his lawyer said Trump would finance the presidential residence and related facilities; yet the plan remains a proposal.

Imagine future presidents conducting official business on property owned by the sitting president’s family. Even if the government receives access without a facility-use charge, ownership and oversight raise questions that deserve public answers before any arrangement moves forward.

Billions for the Trump Family, Cuts to Public Benefits

The broader money story is even harder to ignore. A Reuters investigation estimated that the Trump family earned $2.3 billion from four crypto ventures between mid-2024 and April 2026. Those earnings are not themselves proof of an illegal exchange, but they underscore the extraordinary overlap between the presidency and private financial interests.

Meanwhile, the Congressional Budget Office’s latest projections show the 2025 reconciliation law reducing federal Medicaid outlays by an estimated $1.2 trillion and SNAP spending by $211 billion over 2026–2035. Different budget windows produce different totals, but the direction is unmistakable: deep reductions in programs households rely on while the first family’s business interests keep attracting scrutiny.

The Paper Trail is Getting Harder to Ignore

Sen. Maggie Hassan has also pressed Trump Mobile for answers about clear gaps in required FCC filings, scam prevention and customer data security. Those are allegations and compliance questions, not final agency findings. They still merit answers from a company profiting from the Trump name.

Voters understand the connection between corruption and their own bills. Navigator Research found that 81% say government corruption raises costs, including 75% of independents and 82% of non-MAGA Republicans.

The public understands that corruption costs money. Our job is to put credible reporting in front of people, show them who made the decisions and make sure they remember when they vote.

ICE is shooting people in our streets. In the Bronx, agents in plainclothes shot a man seven times with his 5-year-old in the back seat. It’s a pattern: federal officers have shot at least two dozen people since Trump took office — six dead, three of them U.S. citizens. A DoorDash driver in Austin still has a bullet lodged in his back, denied medical care in ICE custody. And ICE just ordered 1,000 more arrests per day.

Data centers are coming for your electric bill. AI server farms use as much power as a small city, and in Ohio they’re already adding $16 a month to the average bill. Blue states like New York and Virginia are making tech companies pay their own way. In Republican-led states, those protections stalled, failed, or got vetoed. They chose the billionaires.

Everything costs more, and Trump calls it “a very inexpensive price to pay.” Gas hit $4.48 a gallon, up $1.27 in a year. People are choosing between filling the tank and buying groceries. Half of Americans now say they’re highly worried about affording both. That’s not a vibe. That’s your receipt.

We, the people, do not get a vote on the Supreme Court. Tomorrow, the House decides whether we ever will again.

Wednesday morning, House Republicans bring H.J.Res.1 to the floor. The bill locks the Supreme Court at nine justices forever, buried in the Constitution where no future Congress can reach it. Not nine justices for now. Nine justices permanently, immune to every future crisis this country will face.

Congress Built This Power. Republicans Want to Bury It.

Congress has changed the size of the Supreme Court seven times since 1789. George Washington signed one of those changes. Thomas Jefferson signed another. Lincoln expanded the Court to ten justices to break the Dred Scott majority and speed the end of slavery. FDR never even passed his own expansion plan. The threat alone pushed the sitting Court to stop striking down New Deal programs.

That power has belonged to your elected representatives for two centuries. H.J.Res.1 buries it.

Look What They Already Do With Nine

This Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais. It handed presidents sweeping immunity in Trump v. United States. It overturned Dobbs and erased a federal right that stood for nearly fifty years. Monday, a divided 5-4 Court let Trump keep building his $400 million White House ballroom, with Chief Justice Roberts warning in dissent that the project is likely unlawful.

Nine justices did all of that. Republicans want to weld the door shut behind them.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Only 33 percent of Americans approve of this Court, the lowest mark Gallup has recorded in 26 years. Support for adding justices has climbed as high as 54 percent in Marquette’s polling. H.J.Res.1 takes that option off the table and locks a GOP-appointed majority in place into the 2060s.

We are not asking every representative to back expansion tomorrow. We are asking them to keep the door open. One check. One vote. One door left open.

A no vote keeps Congress’s power to check the least accountable branch of government. A yes vote erases that power for every generation behind us.

The Horror in Nepal

While we’ve been arguing about contracts and conspiracy theories, the earth has been moving.

A glacier collapsed on the Nepal-Tibet border earlier this week, sending flash floods and landslides through the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts. As of this morning, 538 people are confirmed dead, nearly 1,000 are still missing (many believed to be tourists), and the International Federation of the Red Cross estimates at least 93,000 people are affected. Eighteen schools have been destroyed; another 20 damaged; 10,000 children need support to keep learning.

The UN calls the impact “immense” — and warns the disaster “is not yet completely over.” A lake formed by the landslide now threatens a secondary flood.

These are families who had nothing to spare and just lost everything. If you're in a position to give — even a few dollars — here are trusted organizations getting aid where it needs to go right now. The Scheme is the System

Three days. That’s how long it took.

Three days for GEO Group to wire a million dollars to MAGA Inc. after landing an $85 million-a-year ICE detention contract. Three more days to send another $413,000 after an $80 million contract. Federal contracting isn’t supposed to work like a kickback scheme dressed in a suit — but here we are.

Read the New York Times reporting again, because the details are the point:

• July 16: GEO subsidiary donates $1 million to MAGA Inc. — three days after signing an $85 million/year ICE contract for a Colorado detention center.

• July 31: Another $413,000 — two days after signing an $80 million/year contract for a North Carolina facility.

• Net income: $31.9 million under Biden → $254.3 million last year.

This isn’t a scandal. It’s a blueprint. Federal contracting is supposed to run on need and merit, not on political tribute. But GEO joins a growing list of MAGA Inc. donors — tobacco companies, nursing home operators, a bridge owner — who got favorable treatment close in time to when they wrote the checks.

Talking points to share:

1. The timing is the story. Contract first, donation second — sometimes days later. That’s not a coincidence. That’s a business model.

2. Profits follow policy. GEO’s net income jumped 8x in one administration. The deportation machine isn’t just cruel, it’s a wealth transfer to the donor class.

3. Taxpayer money, donor rewards. ICE contracts are funded by us. The returns go to executives, lobbyists, and now the President’s super PAC. We’re paying to be robbed.

4. This is the corruption beat. Every time the press catches one of these, we should be louder. Silence is the strategy. Our job is to break it.

Your electric bill jumped again.

You didn’t move. You didn’t add a hot tub. You didn’t suddenly start blasting the AC.

But somebody is using a staggering amount of electricity, and increasingly, ordinary Americans are being asked to help pay for it.

AI data centers are spreading across the country, consuming enormous amounts of power and water while companies negotiate tax breaks and local officials promise economic development.

Then the bills arrive.

Residential electricity prices rose 7.4% in 2025⁠. Bloomberg found⁠ electricity costs in some areas near heavy data-center development climbed as much as 267% over five years.

Americans have noticed.

A Gallup poll⁠ found 70% oppose an AI data center where they live, including 63% of Republicans and 75% of Democrats. Reuters/Ipsos found⁠ 77% worry AI will drive electricity costs higher.

But the most important numbers aren’t in the polls.

They’re at the ballot box.

A Missouri Town Sent a $6 Billion Message

Festus, Missouri, faced a proposed $6 billion data-center project.

Residents organized.

Then voters ousted all four incumbent city council members after the council approved the project. KCUR reported⁠ that the controversy helped drive extraordinary turnout.

Festus isn’t alone.

In Monterey Park, California, 86% of voters backed the nation’s first voter-enacted municipal data-center ban⁠.

In Tucson, residents packed public meetings until the city council unanimously rejected Amazon’s Project Blue⁠.

Three communities. Three different routes to power.

Organize. Show up. Make elected officials choose.

Why People Are Fighting

Electricity isn’t the only concern.

Data centers can consume millions of gallons of water for cooling. Research highlighted by the Association of American Universities⁠ estimated that training GPT-3 consumed roughly 700,000 liters of freshwater.

Then come the tax deals. Google recently secured an agreement in Michigan expected to cut its local taxes roughly in half⁠, saving the company an estimated $125 million.

So residents are asking questions every community should ask:

How much power? How much water? How many permanent jobs? How much public money? And who decided?

Your Town Has Leverage

Data centers need local approvals. Zoning. Permits. Tax incentives. Utility agreements. Infrastructure.

Those decisions create pressure points.

Research on civil resistance by political scientist Erica Chenoweth shows why sustained participation matters: organized nonviolent campaigns have historically succeeded far more often than violent ones⁠.

You don’t need hundreds of people to start.

You need people who keep showing up.

Search the agenda for data center, rezoning, industrial development, and tax abatement.

Festus did not wait for someone else to save their town.

Sixty one years ago today, Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law. Five months earlier, John Lewis walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and took a beating for the ballot you hold now.

You stand on his shoulders. You stand on the shoulders of every marcher who bled in Selma, every organizer who registered voters under threat, every mother who stood in line for hours because someone told her she couldn’t.

Courts gutted their work. Twice. First in 2013, when Shelby County v. Holder struck down the VRA’s preclearance formula and freed states with histories of discrimination to change voting rules without federal oversight. Then again this April, when the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais gutted Section 2, making it far harder for voters of color to challenge maps built to dilute their power. Politicians let the fix rot in committee for thirteen years.

We Are Not Starting Over. We Are Finishing the Job.

Giants built this law with marches, blood, and unbroken will. We defend it with clicks, calls, and unbroken will. Same fight. New tools.

Restore what they ripped away. Defend what still stands. Enshrine a stronger John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act so no court and no legislature ever guts it again.

Take a breath. Before we get to everything they hope you miss, let’s start with what happened this morning at the Supreme Court. Four rulings came down today. Two strengthen democracy. Two do not.

The Court Ruled. Here’s the Scorecard.

This morning, the Supreme Court handed down four decisions in the final sprint of its term. Two land in the win column for democracy. Two do not.

First, the wins.

In Watson v. Republican National Committee⁠, the Court ruled 5-4 that mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day can still be counted if they arrive a few days later⁠. Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote the majority opinion. Chief Justice Roberts and the three liberal justices joined her. Republicans have spent years trying to discard these ballots. Today, the Court said no.

In Chatrie v. United States⁠, the Court ruled 6-3 that police need a warrant before accessing your smartphone location data, even from a third-party tech company. Justice Kagan wrote the majority. It is the Court’s first major digital privacy ruling since 2018. Your location history is now constitutionally protected. That matters for every activist, journalist, and organizer in this country.

Now, the not-so-good.

In Trump v. Cook⁠, the Court blocked Trump from firing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook while her case moves through the lower courts. It is a narrow 5-4 win for the Fed’s independence. Roberts and Kavanaugh held. But the Court also made clear the issue is far from settled.

In Trump v. Slaughter⁠, the Court ruled 6-3 that Trump can fire members of the Federal Trade Commission at will, overturning a 91-year-old precedent. Justice Sotomayor called the decision “grievously wrong.” The FTC, which polices big tech, pharmaceutical companies, and corporate monopolies, now has three Republican commissioners and no Democrats. The agency now answers to Trump, not the independent structure Congress created.

The birthright citizenship ruling in Trump v. Barbara⁠ could arrive tomorrow, the final day of the Court’s term. Civil rights advocates are gathered outside the building right now. NAACP President Derrick Johnson⁠ called Trump’s executive order “blatantly unconstitutional” and warned it would “place countless families at risk of exclusion in the only home they have ever known.” A loss for Trump is expected. But expected is not certain. Watch tomorrow morning.

The House Returns. Don’t Hold Your Breath.

The U.S. House returns to Washington today, and the Rules Committee meets at 4:00 PM ET⁠ to take up H.R. 8800, the FY2027 National Defense Authorization Act⁠, the must-pass defense policy bill.

Here is the context you need: a band of Republican hard-liners has blocked procedural floor votes⁠, holding the entire chamber hostage over the stalled SAVE America Act. Even Trump called them out last week, posting they should “stop voting down ‘Rules’” and demanding, “No more grandstanding, please!” When Trump tells his own team to behave, you know the dysfunction has reached another level. Don’t expect a floor vote this week.

The Amendments Worth Watching

Buried inside today’s committee meeting are two amendments that reveal exactly whose values belong in our military.

Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) is offering an amendment to codify religious neutrality throughout the Defense Department⁠. Commanders could not require subordinates to attend religious activities or tie promotions to religious affiliation. This is not abstract. The Trump administration has spent eighteen months elevating Christian nationalism inside federal agencies.

Rep. Gabe Amo (D-RI) wants the Pentagon to formally study how the war in Iran and Trump’s tariffs have driven up the price of food and fertilizer⁠. Americans feel those costs every time they buy groceries. Amo is building a paper trail. Evidence matters, especially with the midterms approaching.

The Epstein Deadline Is Thursday. Watch Closely.

By Thursday, July 2, the Department of Justice must either release unredacted Epstein files or explain in court why it will not. Judge Emmet Sullivan’s order⁠, secured through journalist Katie Phang’s lawsuit, requires the DOJ to disclose co-conspirator names, foreign-language documents, and a full accounting of every redaction it has made.

This matters because Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche already missed a 1:00 PM court deadline last week⁠, prompting Judge Sullivan to call him out by name. The DOJ was legally required to release these files by December 2025 under the Epstein Files Transparency Act. It missed that deadline. Now it has until Thursday. Watch what officials do, and what they try to hide.

Hungry Kids Don’t Have a Lobby. These Two Members Do.

Here is a genuinely hopeful story hiding in plain sight. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet (D-MI) and Rep. Glenn Thompson (R-PA) introduced the bipartisan Local Foods for Healthy Schools Act this week⁠. The bill would permanently restore a USDA program Trump ended in 2025, funding schools to buy fresh, locally grown food for cafeterias.

Michigan alone would have received nearly $18 million under the program. The bill has support from the School Nutrition Association, the National Education Association, and the Michigan Farm Bureau. Kids get healthier meals. Local farmers gain reliable markets. Schools stretch their budgets. This is exactly the kind of legislation that could pass with broad bipartisan support, if it ever receives a vote. Your job is to help make sure it does.

Your Action List This Week

1. Watch the July 2 Epstein deadline. If the DOJ defies the court order again, call the DOJ comment line at 202-353-1555 and demand accountability from your elected officials.

2. Call your representative and ask them to cosponsor the Local Foods for Healthy Schools Act. Find your representative here⁠.

3. Follow tomorrow’s birthright citizenship ruling. Check the NAACP’s website⁠ for real-time response and action steps as soon as the ruling drops.

4. Share this piece. The entire point of this week’s noise is to bury these stories. Don’t let it.

Here is what they want you to miss this week.

The Supreme Court Is Not Done With Us

This is the final sprint of a Court that has already delivered its verdict on democracy. In April, a 6-3 ruling hollowed out the Voting Rights Act so thoroughly⁠ that Justice Kagan called it the “now-completed demolition” of a 60-year-old civil rights law. That happened. It is done.

What is not done: the birthright citizenship ruling. Any day now, the Court will decide whether to uphold Trump’s executive order stripping citizenship from children born on U.S. soil⁠ to undocumented or temporarily-present parents. Every lower court has rejected the order. But with this Court, we wait. If it goes his way, 47 million people in mixed-status families face a new level of terror. Hundreds of thousands of babies born each year could lose citizenship at birth.

That is not the only trap door still open. The Court also has pending decisions on presidential firing power, mail ballots, transgender athletes, and the revocation of Temporary Protected Status⁠ for over a dozen countries. Every ruling could arrive this week. Watch every word.

ICE Detention: Deaths, Dehumanization, and a Quiet Rule Change

Three people have already died at Camp East Montana, the massive ICE detention hub in El Paso that federal investigators found opened without basic safeguards, medical planning, or proper evidence handling⁠. The GAO report found missing use-of-force records, detainees with serious conditions going without medicine, and $11.5 million wasted on guards, meals, and medical services before a single migrant was even held there⁠.

Then ICE made it worse. New detention standards issued this month explicitly “reduce the burden” on private contractors⁠, including wider use of AI tools to communicate with detainees instead of human interpreters. The 60,000 people currently in custody have fewer protections than they had two weeks ago. This is not bureaucratic drift. This is deliberate.

They Are Still Targeting Families in Uniform

Tomorrow, House Democrats will push an amendment to block ICE from deporting service members, veterans, and their immediate families without due process and access to legal counsel. The first hurdle: the House Rules Committee, where leadership can bury an amendment before the public ever sees a real vote.

This is not hypothetical. The Trump administration revoked Biden-era protections for military families⁠ and has allowed deportation machinery to close in on people who served, and on the parents and spouses tied to that service. Watch the Rules Committee. Procedure is where they hide the cruelty.

Food Is a Crisis. Florida Proves It.

Food banks across Florida are overwhelmed⁠ as grocery prices climb and federal nutrition support erodes. The front page of a Panama City paper this morning put a number on it: 82% of respondents say food costs are rising at a troublesome pace.

Meanwhile, at least 3.5 million people have already lost SNAP access⁠ since Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill took effect, with work requirements now extending to age 64. And a new House spending bill would cut another $6.2 billion from SNAP and $200 million from WIC⁠, the nutrition program serving 6.8 million infants, young children, and their mothers.

This is not a budget dispute. This is a policy choice to let children go hungry.

The Paramount-Warner Deal and the Attorney General Who Blessed It

The Justice Department cleared the $111 billion merger of Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery⁠ with no divestitures and no meaningful conditions. Under one roof: Paramount, Warner Bros., HBO Max, Paramount+, CNN, and CBS News. Two of the largest news brands in the country, answering to one set of owners, approved by one administration.

That administration is also trying to make Todd Blanche its permanent Attorney General. Trump’s acting AG and former personal attorney⁠ now heads into a Senate confirmation fight after facing bipartisan scrutiny over a proposed $1.8 billion DOJ “anti-weaponization fund.” He told Congress under oath the fund is “not moving forward.” The DOJ has since refused to formally kill it. Three Democratic senators have already demanded the FCC pause the Paramount merger⁠ citing national security concerns and questions about the review process.

When the same administration approves monopoly-scale media consolidation, installs a loyalist as the nation’s top law enforcement officer, and keeps a slush fund technically alive, the pattern matters. Watch it.

Tomorrow’s Primaries: Show Up

New York and Maryland vote tomorrow. Polls open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in New York, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Maryland. New York uses a closed primary; Maryland allows same-day voter registration with proof of residency⁠.

Only 8% of New Yorkers typically show up to primaries. Your vote carries 13 times the weight it will in November.

The races include Maryland’s 5th District, where former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn⁠ defended the building on January 6 and is now running to serve the people he protected. In Maryland’s 6th, billionaire David Trone is trying to buy his way back to Congress against Rep. April McClain Delaney. In New York, races involving Reps. Dan Goldman and Adriano Espaillat will test how much political muscle Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s endorsements can carry down ballot.

• Oppose SNAP and WIC cuts: Send a prewritten letter to your senators through FRAC’s Action Network⁠, urging them to reverse the devastating cuts already in law and reject the House Farm Bill.

• Stop ICE detention funding: Send a prewritten message through the National Immigrant Justice Center⁠ demanding Congress refuse more tax dollars for ICE and CBP until the deaths and abuses stop.

• Protect birthright citizenship: Add your name through the ACLU’s action page⁠ as the Supreme Court prepares its ruling this week.

• Defend the Education Department’s civil rights office: Find your representative through Congress.gov⁠ and demand they oppose transferring civil rights enforcement out of the Department of Education.

• Find your local food bank and share it with someone who needs it: Use Feeding America’s food bank locator⁠.

This Is Your Moment

They want you overwhelmed. They want you scrolling and silent. They want the noise to win.

It will not. Not as long as you show up, speak up, and refuse to let the pattern hide in plain sight.

History does not belong to the people in power. It belongs to the people who refused to look away: the ones who called when it was inconvenient, voted when turnout was low, shared the truth before the algorithm buried it, and kept showing up when every headline told them to give up.

That is you. That has always been you.

Today we celebrate Juneteenth - the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is often described as America’s “second Independence Day,” but that framing misses something important. Juneteenth is not simply a story about freedom won. It’s a story about freedom delayed; a reminder that rights guaranteed on paper mean very little if powerful people are allowed to ignore them. The enslavers of Texas knew slavery had been abolished. They simply chose not to tell the people whose lives were being stolen. Freedom arrived only when it was enforced.

That lesson feels especially relevant today.

Just weeks ago, the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Louisiana v. Callais, a ruling that effectively guts one of the most important remaining tools of the Voting Rights Act. For decades, Section 2 of the VRA allowed voters to challenge discriminatory election maps that diluted the political power of Black communities and other communities of color. The Court’s decision makes those challenges dramatically harder and opens the door for states to redraw districts in ways that weaken minority representation across the country.

Indeed, as soon as the SCOTUS decision came down, red states immediately began doing so.

Let’s be clear: The struggle for civil rights did not end with the Civil War. It did not end with Reconstruction. It did not end with the Civil Rights Movement. Every generation has faced new efforts to roll back the rights previous generations fought and bled to secure. Poll taxes became voter ID laws, literacy tests became voter roll purges, explicit racial exclusion became sophisticated gerrymandering. Tactics change, but the goal remains the same: limiting who gets a voice in our democracy.

That is why Juneteenth matters even more in 2026.

It is not merely a day to remember what happened in the past. It is a day to recognize that freedom, equality, and democracy are never self-executing. They require vigilance and participation by ordinary people willing to stand up when those rights come under attack.

So today, celebrate Juneteenth. Honor the generations who fought for freedom and voting rights. But also recognize that the work is not finished: the promise of America has always been bigger than the reality. Our job is to keep pushing until the two finally match.

Freedom delayed is freedom denied. And democracy, like freedom, only survives when people fight for it.
