We, the people, do not get a vote on the Supreme Court. Tomorrow, the House decides whether we ever will again.

Wednesday morning, House Republicans bring H.J.Res.1 to the floor. The bill locks the Supreme Court at nine justices forever, buried in the Constitution where no future Congress can reach it. Not nine justices for now. Nine justices permanently, immune to every future crisis this country will face.

Congress Built This Power. Republicans Want to Bury It.

Congress has changed the size of the Supreme Court seven times since 1789. George Washington signed one of those changes. Thomas Jefferson signed another. Lincoln expanded the Court to ten justices to break the Dred Scott majority and speed the end of slavery. FDR never even passed his own expansion plan. The threat alone pushed the sitting Court to stop striking down New Deal programs.

That power has belonged to your elected representatives for two centuries. H.J.Res.1 buries it.

Look What They Already Do With Nine

This Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais. It handed presidents sweeping immunity in Trump v. United States. It overturned Dobbs and erased a federal right that stood for nearly fifty years. Monday, a divided 5-4 Court let Trump keep building his $400 million White House ballroom, with Chief Justice Roberts warning in dissent that the project is likely unlawful.

Nine justices did all of that. Republicans want to weld the door shut behind them.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Only 33 percent of Americans approve of this Court, the lowest mark Gallup has recorded in 26 years. Support for adding justices has climbed as high as 54 percent in Marquette’s polling. H.J.Res.1 takes that option off the table and locks a GOP-appointed majority in place into the 2060s.

We are not asking every representative to back expansion tomorrow. We are asking them to keep the door open. One check. One vote. One door left open.

A no vote keeps Congress’s power to check the least accountable branch of government. A yes vote erases that power for every generation behind us.

We know. We felt it too.

In a world full of men who perform cruelty as a brand, who treat empathy like weakness, who build empires by extracting from the vulnerable — Dolly built hers by giving. The Imagination Library has shipped over 330 million free books to children since 1995. She put a million dollars of her own money toward Moderna’s COVID vaccine before it even had a name. The Horror in Nepal

While we’ve been arguing about contracts and conspiracy theories, the earth has been moving.

A glacier collapsed on the Nepal-Tibet border earlier this week, sending flash floods and landslides through the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts. As of this morning, 538 people are confirmed dead, nearly 1,000 are still missing (many believed to be tourists), and the International Federation of the Red Cross estimates at least 93,000 people are affected. Eighteen schools have been destroyed; another 20 damaged; 10,000 children need support to keep learning.

The UN calls the impact “immense” — and warns the disaster “is not yet completely over.” A lake formed by the landslide now threatens a secondary flood.

These are families who had nothing to spare and just lost everything. If you're in a position to give — even a few dollars — here are trusted organizations getting aid where it needs to go right now. If money is too tight (we know it is for a lot of us), forwarding this list to someone who can, or simply amplifying the resources, matters just as much. We don't have to do everything. The Scheme is the System

Three days. That’s how long it took.

Three days for GEO Group to wire a million dollars to MAGA Inc. after landing an $85 million-a-year ICE detention contract. Three more days to send another $413,000 after an $80 million contract. Federal contracting isn’t supposed to work like a kickback scheme dressed in a suit — but here we are.

Read the New York Times reporting again, because the details are the point:

• July 16: GEO subsidiary donates $1 million to MAGA Inc. — three days after signing an $85 million/year ICE contract for a Colorado detention center.

• July 31: Another $413,000 — two days after signing an $80 million/year contract for a North Carolina facility.

• Net income: $31.9 million under Biden → $254.3 million last year.

This isn’t a scandal. It’s a blueprint. Federal contracting is supposed to run on need and merit, not on political tribute. But GEO joins a growing list of MAGA Inc. donors — tobacco companies, nursing home operators, a bridge owner — who got favorable treatment close in time to when they wrote the checks.

Talking points to share:

1. The timing is the story. Contract first, donation second — sometimes days later. That’s not a coincidence. That’s a business model.

2. Profits follow policy. GEO’s net income jumped 8x in one administration. The deportation machine isn’t just cruel, it’s a wealth transfer to the donor class.

3. Taxpayer money, donor rewards. ICE contracts are funded by us. The returns go to executives, lobbyists, and now the President’s super PAC. We’re paying to be robbed.

4. This is the corruption beat. Every time the press catches one of these, we should be louder. Silence is the strategy. Our job is to break it.

Your electric bill jumped again.

You didn’t move. You didn’t add a hot tub. You didn’t suddenly start blasting the AC.

But somebody is using a staggering amount of electricity, and increasingly, ordinary Americans are being asked to help pay for it.

AI data centers are spreading across the country, consuming enormous amounts of power and water while companies negotiate tax breaks and local officials promise economic development.

Then the bills arrive.

Residential electricity prices rose 7.4% in 2025⁠. Bloomberg found⁠ electricity costs in some areas near heavy data-center development climbed as much as 267% over five years.

Americans have noticed.

A Gallup poll⁠ found 70% oppose an AI data center where they live, including 63% of Republicans and 75% of Democrats. Reuters/Ipsos found⁠ 77% worry AI will drive electricity costs higher.

But the most important numbers aren’t in the polls.

They’re at the ballot box.

A Missouri Town Sent a $6 Billion Message

Festus, Missouri, faced a proposed $6 billion data-center project.

Residents organized.

Then voters ousted all four incumbent city council members after the council approved the project. KCUR reported⁠ that the controversy helped drive extraordinary turnout.

Festus isn’t alone.

In Monterey Park, California, 86% of voters backed the nation’s first voter-enacted municipal data-center ban⁠.

In Tucson, residents packed public meetings until the city council unanimously rejected Amazon’s Project Blue⁠.

Three communities. Three different routes to power.

Organize. Show up. Make elected officials choose.

Why People Are Fighting

Electricity isn’t the only concern.

Data centers can consume millions of gallons of water for cooling. Research highlighted by the Association of American Universities⁠ estimated that training GPT-3 consumed roughly 700,000 liters of freshwater.

Then come the tax deals. Google recently secured an agreement in Michigan expected to cut its local taxes roughly in half⁠, saving the company an estimated $125 million.

So residents are asking questions every community should ask:

How much power? How much water? How many permanent jobs? How much public money? And who decided?

Your Town Has Leverage

Data centers need local approvals. Zoning. Permits. Tax incentives. Utility agreements. Infrastructure.

Those decisions create pressure points.

Research on civil resistance by political scientist Erica Chenoweth shows why sustained participation matters: organized nonviolent campaigns have historically succeeded far more often than violent ones⁠.

You don’t need hundreds of people to start.

You need people who keep showing up.

Find your next city council, county commission or planning commission meeting.

Search the agenda for data center, rezoning, industrial development, and tax abatement.

Ask how much electricity and water the project requires. Ask who pays for infrastructure. Ask how many permanent jobs it creates. Ask what tax breaks the company wants.

Then bring three neighbors.

Festus did not wait for someone else to save their town.

Neither did Tucson.

Neither did Monterey Park.

They organized. They showed up. They won.

Sixty one years ago today, Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law. Five months earlier, John Lewis walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and took a beating for the ballot you hold now.

You stand on his shoulders. You stand on the shoulders of every marcher who bled in Selma, every organizer who registered voters under threat, every mother who stood in line for hours because someone told her she couldn’t.

Courts gutted their work. Twice. First in 2013, when Shelby County v. Holder struck down the VRA’s preclearance formula and freed states with histories of discrimination to change voting rules without federal oversight. Then again this April, when the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais gutted Section 2, making it far harder for voters of color to challenge maps built to dilute their power. Politicians let the fix rot in committee for thirteen years.

We Are Not Starting Over. We Are Finishing the Job.

Giants built this law with marches, blood, and unbroken will. We defend it with clicks, calls, and unbroken will. Same fight. New tools.

Restore what they ripped away. Defend what still stands. Enshrine a stronger John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act so no court and no legislature ever guts it again.

Take a breath. Before we get to everything they hope you miss, let’s start with what happened this morning at the Supreme Court. Four rulings came down today. Two strengthen democracy. Two do not.

The Court Ruled. Here’s the Scorecard.

This morning, the Supreme Court handed down four decisions in the final sprint of its term. Two land in the win column for democracy. Two do not.

First, the wins.

In Watson v. Republican National Committee⁠, the Court ruled 5-4 that mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day can still be counted if they arrive a few days later⁠. Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote the majority opinion. Chief Justice Roberts and the three liberal justices joined her. Republicans have spent years trying to discard these ballots. Today, the Court said no.

In Chatrie v. United States⁠, the Court ruled 6-3 that police need a warrant before accessing your smartphone location data, even from a third-party tech company. Justice Kagan wrote the majority. It is the Court’s first major digital privacy ruling since 2018. Your location history is now constitutionally protected. That matters for every activist, journalist, and organizer in this country.

Now, the not-so-good.

In Trump v. Cook⁠, the Court blocked Trump from firing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook while her case moves through the lower courts. It is a narrow 5-4 win for the Fed’s independence. Roberts and Kavanaugh held. But the Court also made clear the issue is far from settled.

In Trump v. Slaughter⁠, the Court ruled 6-3 that Trump can fire members of the Federal Trade Commission at will, overturning a 91-year-old precedent. Justice Sotomayor called the decision “grievously wrong.” The FTC, which polices big tech, pharmaceutical companies, and corporate monopolies, now has three Republican commissioners and no Democrats. The agency now answers to Trump, not the independent structure Congress created.

The birthright citizenship ruling in Trump v. Barbara⁠ could arrive tomorrow, the final day of the Court’s term. Civil rights advocates are gathered outside the building right now. NAACP President Derrick Johnson⁠ called Trump’s executive order “blatantly unconstitutional” and warned it would “place countless families at risk of exclusion in the only home they have ever known.” A loss for Trump is expected. But expected is not certain. Watch tomorrow morning.

The House Returns. Don’t Hold Your Breath.

The U.S. House returns to Washington today, and the Rules Committee meets at 4:00 PM ET⁠ to take up H.R. 8800, the FY2027 National Defense Authorization Act⁠, the must-pass defense policy bill.

Here is the context you need: a band of Republican hard-liners has blocked procedural floor votes⁠, holding the entire chamber hostage over the stalled SAVE America Act. Even Trump called them out last week, posting they should “stop voting down ‘Rules’” and demanding, “No more grandstanding, please!” When Trump tells his own team to behave, you know the dysfunction has reached another level. Don’t expect a floor vote this week.

The Amendments Worth Watching

Buried inside today’s committee meeting are two amendments that reveal exactly whose values belong in our military.

Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) is offering an amendment to codify religious neutrality throughout the Defense Department⁠. Commanders could not require subordinates to attend religious activities or tie promotions to religious affiliation. This is not abstract. The Trump administration has spent eighteen months elevating Christian nationalism inside federal agencies.

Rep. Gabe Amo (D-RI) wants the Pentagon to formally study how the war in Iran and Trump’s tariffs have driven up the price of food and fertilizer⁠. Americans feel those costs every time they buy groceries. Amo is building a paper trail. Evidence matters, especially with the midterms approaching.

The Epstein Deadline Is Thursday. Watch Closely.

By Thursday, July 2, the Department of Justice must either release unredacted Epstein files or explain in court why it will not. Judge Emmet Sullivan’s order⁠, secured through journalist Katie Phang’s lawsuit, requires the DOJ to disclose co-conspirator names, foreign-language documents, and a full accounting of every redaction it has made.

This matters because Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche already missed a 1:00 PM court deadline last week⁠, prompting Judge Sullivan to call him out by name. The DOJ was legally required to release these files by December 2025 under the Epstein Files Transparency Act. It missed that deadline. Now it has until Thursday. Watch what officials do, and what they try to hide.

Hungry Kids Don’t Have a Lobby. These Two Members Do.

Here is a genuinely hopeful story hiding in plain sight. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet (D-MI) and Rep. Glenn Thompson (R-PA) introduced the bipartisan Local Foods for Healthy Schools Act this week⁠. The bill would permanently restore a USDA program Trump ended in 2025, funding schools to buy fresh, locally grown food for cafeterias.

Michigan alone would have received nearly $18 million under the program. The bill has support from the School Nutrition Association, the National Education Association, and the Michigan Farm Bureau. Kids get healthier meals. Local farmers gain reliable markets. Schools stretch their budgets. This is exactly the kind of legislation that could pass with broad bipartisan support, if it ever receives a vote. Your job is to help make sure it does.

Here is what they want you to miss this week.

The Supreme Court Is Not Done With Us

This is the final sprint of a Court that has already delivered its verdict on democracy. In April, a 6-3 ruling hollowed out the Voting Rights Act so thoroughly⁠ that Justice Kagan called it the “now-completed demolition” of a 60-year-old civil rights law. That happened. It is done.

What is not done: the birthright citizenship ruling. Any day now, the Court will decide whether to uphold Trump’s executive order stripping citizenship from children born on U.S. soil⁠ to undocumented or temporarily-present parents. Every lower court has rejected the order. But with this Court, we wait. If it goes his way, 47 million people in mixed-status families face a new level of terror. Hundreds of thousands of babies born each year could lose citizenship at birth.

That is not the only trap door still open. The Court also has pending decisions on presidential firing power, mail ballots, transgender athletes, and the revocation of Temporary Protected Status⁠ for over a dozen countries. Every ruling could arrive this week. Watch every word.

ICE Detention: Deaths, Dehumanization, and a Quiet Rule Change

Three people have already died at Camp East Montana, the massive ICE detention hub in El Paso that federal investigators found opened without basic safeguards, medical planning, or proper evidence handling⁠. The GAO report found missing use-of-force records, detainees with serious conditions going without medicine, and $11.5 million wasted on guards, meals, and medical services before a single migrant was even held there⁠.

Then ICE made it worse. New detention standards issued this month explicitly “reduce the burden” on private contractors⁠, including wider use of AI tools to communicate with detainees instead of human interpreters. The 60,000 people currently in custody have fewer protections than they had two weeks ago. This is not bureaucratic drift. This is deliberate.

They Are Still Targeting Families in Uniform

Tomorrow, House Democrats will push an amendment to block ICE from deporting service members, veterans, and their immediate families without due process and access to legal counsel. The first hurdle: the House Rules Committee, where leadership can bury an amendment before the public ever sees a real vote.

This is not hypothetical. The Trump administration revoked Biden-era protections for military families⁠ and has allowed deportation machinery to close in on people who served, and on the parents and spouses tied to that service. Watch the Rules Committee. Procedure is where they hide the cruelty.

Food Is a Crisis. Florida Proves It.

Food banks across Florida are overwhelmed⁠ as grocery prices climb and federal nutrition support erodes. The front page of a Panama City paper this morning put a number on it: 82% of respondents say food costs are rising at a troublesome pace.

Meanwhile, at least 3.5 million people have already lost SNAP access⁠ since Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill took effect, with work requirements now extending to age 64. And a new House spending bill would cut another $6.2 billion from SNAP and $200 million from WIC⁠, the nutrition program serving 6.8 million infants, young children, and their mothers.

This is not a budget dispute. This is a policy choice to let children go hungry.

The Paramount-Warner Deal and the Attorney General Who Blessed It

The Justice Department cleared the $111 billion merger of Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery⁠ with no divestitures and no meaningful conditions. Under one roof: Paramount, Warner Bros., HBO Max, Paramount+, CNN, and CBS News. Two of the largest news brands in the country, answering to one set of owners, approved by one administration.

That administration is also trying to make Todd Blanche its permanent Attorney General. Trump’s acting AG and former personal attorney⁠ now heads into a Senate confirmation fight after facing bipartisan scrutiny over a proposed $1.8 billion DOJ “anti-weaponization fund.” He told Congress under oath the fund is “not moving forward.” The DOJ has since refused to formally kill it. Three Democratic senators have already demanded the FCC pause the Paramount merger⁠ citing national security concerns and questions about the review process.

When the same administration approves monopoly-scale media consolidation, installs a loyalist as the nation’s top law enforcement officer, and keeps a slush fund technically alive, the pattern matters. Watch it.

Tomorrow’s Primaries: Show Up

New York and Maryland vote tomorrow. Polls open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in New York, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Maryland. New York uses a closed primary; Maryland allows same-day voter registration with proof of residency⁠.

Only 8% of New Yorkers typically show up to primaries. Your vote carries 13 times the weight it will in November.

The races include Maryland’s 5th District, where former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn⁠ defended the building on January 6 and is now running to serve the people he protected. In Maryland’s 6th, billionaire David Trone is trying to buy his way back to Congress against Rep. April McClain Delaney. In New York, races involving Reps. Dan Goldman and Adriano Espaillat will test how much political muscle Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s endorsements can carry down ballot.

Today we celebrate Juneteenth - the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is often described as America’s “second Independence Day,” but that framing misses something important. Juneteenth is not simply a story about freedom won. It’s a story about freedom delayed; a reminder that rights guaranteed on paper mean very little if powerful people are allowed to ignore them. The enslavers of Texas knew slavery had been abolished. They simply chose not to tell the people whose lives were being stolen. Freedom arrived only when it was enforced.

That lesson feels especially relevant today.

Just weeks ago, the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Louisiana v. Callais, a ruling that effectively guts one of the most important remaining tools of the Voting Rights Act. For decades, Section 2 of the VRA allowed voters to challenge discriminatory election maps that diluted the political power of Black communities and other communities of color. The Court’s decision makes those challenges dramatically harder and opens the door for states to redraw districts in ways that weaken minority representation across the country.

Indeed, as soon as the SCOTUS decision came down, red states immediately began doing so.

Let’s be clear: The struggle for civil rights did not end with the Civil War. It did not end with Reconstruction. It did not end with the Civil Rights Movement. Every generation has faced new efforts to roll back the rights previous generations fought and bled to secure. Poll taxes became voter ID laws, literacy tests became voter roll purges, explicit racial exclusion became sophisticated gerrymandering. Tactics change, but the goal remains the same: limiting who gets a voice in our democracy.

That is why Juneteenth matters even more in 2026.

It is not merely a day to remember what happened in the past. It is a day to recognize that freedom, equality, and democracy are never self-executing. They require vigilance and participation by ordinary people willing to stand up when those rights come under attack.

We know that disinformation, voter suppression, and attacks on civil rights are all connected. The same forces trying to rewrite our history are often the same forces trying to restrict our future.

So today, celebrate Juneteenth. Honor the generations who fought for freedom and voting rights. But also recognize that the work is not finished: the promise of America has always been bigger than the reality. Our job is to keep pushing until the two finally match.

Freedom delayed is freedom denied. And democracy, like freedom, only survives when people fight for it.

They will point you at the spectacle. The handshake photo. The “peace deal.” The birthday cage fight. While you stare at the ring, they are moving money, burying surveillance tools, and keeping a taxpayer slush fund for cop-beaters on life support.

Do not look away from what matters.

The Iran Deal Nobody Has Read

There is a framework. There is a ceasefire. There is a memorandum of understanding — and you cannot read it. Nothing has been publicly released. And the gap between what the U.S. says the deal says and what Iran says it says is wide enough to drive a tanker through.

Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency claims the U.S. agreed to release $24 billion in frozen assets⁠ — with half available before negotiations even begin. A senior U.S. official called that characterization “spin.” According to CBS News reporting on the proposed agreement⁠, Iran will still be able to charge commercial ships fees to transit the Strait of Hormuz — directly contradicting the White House’s framing of a “free” strait. Israel is not bound by any agreement. The Lebanese Army urges caution. Signing is pushed to Friday.

No one in Congress has seen the MOU. No one in the public has seen it. (Remember “concepts of a plan?”) A deal reshaping Middle East geopolitics is being signed without Congressional review, public accountability, or binding commitments from our closest ally in the region.

The hangover may arrive before the ink dries.

The Spy Tools Lapsed. Nobody’s Coming to Fix It.

On Friday, Section 702 of FISA expired⁠. This is the law allowing the federal government to collect communications of foreigners abroad — and search them for Americans’ data without a warrant. Congress failed to reauthorize it. The House left town. They won’t be back until June 23.

Here is what the administration hopes you miss: the tools haven’t gone dark. As the Brennan Center explains⁠, Section 702 collection operates under annual court certifications running through March 2027. The surveillance continues. The statute just lapsed — and with it, the only legislative leverage reformers had to demand warrant protections for Americans’ data.

This lapse happened in part because Trump tried to install Bill Pulte as acting Director of National Intelligence⁠ despite lacking an iota of national security experience. Democrats refused to reauthorize these tools under an unqualified loyalist. The surveillance state keeps running on autopilot while the adults argue over who’s in charge.

The fight is not over. It’s more urgent than ever.

The Slush Fund Is Cornered — But Not Dead

The $1.8 billion taxpayer slush fund⁠ designed to compensate Trump’s political allies — including people convicted of assaulting police on January 6 — is blocked by federal judge Leonie Brinkema. The Justice Department has four days to certify in writing that it will not proceed.

Here is the trap: Trump hates admitting defeat. But if DOJ fights back, it contradicts sworn statements made in court and before Congress. Rep. Jamie Raskin has already pledged continued opposition⁠ to any effort to route taxpayer money to January 6 rioters.

Watch Alexandria, Virginia this week. That’s where the accountability story is playing out.

The Screwworm We Should All Be Talking About

New World Screwworm⁠ — a parasite that lays eggs in living animals’ wounds, with larvae that eat flesh — has been detected inside U.S. borders. Twenty-one Senate Democrats sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins demanding immediate escalation: deploy sterile flies at scale, activate veterinarians as mandatory reporters, and cut bureaucratic delays.

We eradicated screwworm once before. We can do it again. But not with this administration’s pace.

They Are Coming for Your Groceries — Again

A coalition of 23 Democratic state attorneys general⁠ sent a letter to Senate leadership urging Congress to restore SNAP. Forty-two million Americans depend on it — 16 million children, 8 million seniors, and 1.2 million veterans. Republican cuts would cost the average family of four $175 more in groceries every month.

Speaker Johnson has already promised “Reconciliation 3.0” — another party-line bill targeting Medicaid and SNAP — the moment the ICE funding bill clears the House. The groundwork starts now, quietly, in committee rooms and back hallways.

The $70 Billion ICE Blank Check Is Headed for the House

Late Thursday night, Senate Republicans passed a 70-billion-dollar bill⁠ funding ICE and Border Patrol through the end of Trump’s term, voting 52-47 after an 18-hour overnight session. Only one Republican, Lisa Murkowski, voted no. The bill now moves to the House, where a vote is expected this week.

This bill does not just fund deportations. It includes a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” that could compensate Trump’s political allies, including people convicted of assaulting police on January 6. Democrats and some Republicans tried to kill that fund. They failed. Republicans voted it through anyway.

FISA Expires June 12. The Fight Is Not Over.

Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, the government’s warrantless surveillance authority, expires this Thursday, June 12. The Senate blocked a three-year extension last week after Democrats refused to move forward without reforms, objecting to Trump’s appointment of unqualified loyalist Bill Pulte as acting Director of National Intelligence.

This is a rare moment. Privacy advocates on both sides of the aisle want real reforms: warrant requirements before the government can search Americans’ communications, and a ban on buying location data from data brokers to track protesters. But the window is closing fast.

Your action: Contact your senators now and tell them: no FISA reauthorization without warrant protections. Use 5calls.org⁠ for a script and direct phone numbers.

They Want Your 401(k) in Crypto

The Trump Department of Labor is pushing a rule that would allow 401(k) plans to invest in cryptocurrency, private equity, and private credit, exposing an estimated 14.2 trillion dollars⁠ in American retirement savings to volatile assets. Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, along with Rep. Bobby Scott, called the rule harmful and counter to existing law. The Trump family has accumulated as much as $5 billion in paper wealth tied to crypto since taking office.

The public comment period on this rule closed June 1, but the Labor Department has not finalized it. The pressure campaign is not over.

Your action: Call the Department of Labor at 1-866-444-3272 and tell them to withdraw this rule. Amplify the warnings from Sanders and Warren to anyone with a retirement account. This is not abstract. This is your neighbor’s pension.

The Good News: The House Told Trump No on Iran

Last Wednesday, the House passed a war powers resolution⁠ directing Trump to seek congressional authorization for military operations in Iran, 215-208. Four Republicans crossed over. It marks the first time the House succeeded on such a resolution after three prior attempts failed.

It is largely symbolic for now: it still needs the Senate, and Trump would likely veto it. But it reveals a crack in the GOP wall. An increasing number of Republicans are hearing from constituents who oppose another open-ended war.

Your action: Thank the four Republicans who voted yes: Tom Barrett (MI), Warren Davidson (OH), and their colleagues. A phone call of thanks matters. It tells them their constituents are watching, and it builds the coalition we need for the Senate vote ahead.

Watch the Courts, Too

Two Virginia residents filed a federal lawsuit Saturday⁠ seeking to block Trump’s UFC fight on the White House South Lawn, scheduled for June 14, his 80th birthday. The plaintiffs argue the event was never properly authorized, violated National Park Service regulations, and skipped required environmental review. The UFC event, called “Freedom 250,” involves a 600-ton steel arch installed on the South Lawn. Attorneys call it “deeply corrupt,” arguing Trump stands to gain financially through his TKO stock holdings.

The lawsuit is a long shot. But every legal challenge to the normalization of corruption is a brick in the wall.

CNN broke this story yesterday, and I need you to read it.

The Trump regime banned America’s top infectious disease researchers from communicating directly with the World Health Organization during active outbreaks. During an Ebola crisis. The scientists whose entire purpose is to stop moments like this one were forbidden from doing their jobs.

They could attend WHO virtual meetings. Three at a time. Listening only. Forbidden from speaking without routing requests through political appointees first.

One source told CNN this was “unheard of during a U.S. response to emerging public health emergencies.”

One hundred and thirty-nine people are dead in the DRC. Six hundred infected. The human toll continues to increase.

Did this have to happen? No. And the people responsible have names.

They Saw This Coming. They Chose It Anyway.

Before a single 2026 case was confirmed, Trump had already demolished the infrastructure built to prevent exactly this moment.

In his first weeks back in power, he slashed roughly 80% of all U.S. overseas aid, including the emergency outbreak teams stationed on the ground in the DRC. No replacement plan. No transition. Ideology signed into policy and abandoned, until the dead became undeniable.

Accidents happen when no one knew. Everyone knew.

They Burned USAID to the Ground

USAID funded disease surveillance networks across East Africa. It financed the supply chains that moved protective equipment to health workers before outbreaks became crises.

Trump shut all of it down. Operations ceased in summer 2025. In the DRC alone, U.S. humanitarian funding dropped by nearly 80%, gutting the early detection systems that give responders a fighting chance to save lives. The New York Times confirmed USAID financed critical surveillance and medical supply chains across the region. Former USAID official Jeremy Konyndyk stated: the dismantlement made this outbreak worse.

They knew. They chose it.

The CDC Is Flying Blind

Trump’s CDC has no fully staffed pandemic preparedness office. Key leadership positions remain vacant or filled by political loyalists. During the hantavirus outbreak earlier this year, health information came from appointees rather than scientists, because Trump fired or forced out the scientists.

National Nurses United asserted: “The CDC under Trump is flying blind. And that is by design.”

By design.

A Tax Cut, Funded in Blood

Former CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden called the combination of USAID cuts, WHO withdrawal, and CDC gutting a “1-2 punch to health infrastructure” with no precedent in modern American history. The Economic Policy Institute warned in April 2025 this crisis was coming.

The money did not disappear. It moved up. To tax cuts. To billionaires.

One hundred and thirty-nine people are dead. More will follow. Somewhere in this regime’s ledger, that cost has been calculated, accepted, and filed.

The Regime Decides Who Deserves Protection

Authoritarians do not fail at protecting people. They decide who deserves protection and who does not.

The DRC is far away. The people are Black. The cameras are not there.

So the firewall came down. The scientists were silenced. The death toll climbed. The regime moved on.

Those people had names. Families. Futures. They deserved a country wealthy and organized enough to help stop what was coming. They got ideology instead. That is not a policy failure. That is a choice, made by people in suits, sitting in offices in Washington, D.C., very far from the dying.

They tore down the firewall. We rebuild it together, starting with the truth.

The fire is not coming. It is already here.

Right now, in statehouses across the South, Republican-controlled legislatures are running a coordinated, deliberate campaign to silence Black voters. They are redrawing maps. Gutting protections. Exploiting Supreme Court rulings that shredded what remained of the Voting Rights Act. This is not a slippage. This is a strategy. And it will not stop unless we stop it.

This Saturday, May 16th, we answer back.

All Roads Lead to the South

Sixty years after civil rights marchers crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday, thousands will return to Alabama to say: we will not go back. Faith leaders gather at 9 AM in Selma. A national mass rally runs 1 to 5 PM at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery. Actions are happening in solidarity across the country.

Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King will be there. The No Kings coalition will be there. Black Voters Matter will be there. Co-founders Cliff Albright and LaTosha Brown put it plainly: Alabama has always been sacred ground in the fight for freedom, and this moment demands that we rise together once again.

Not Racist Is Not Enough

If you are white and you have been watching this unfold, I need to say something directly to you.

Not being racist is a starting position. It is not a contribution. In a five-alarm fire, standing at a safe distance and feeling bad about the smoke is not allyship. It is observation.

We are past that point.

The Black Power War Room has been sounding this alarm for months. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund has documented, in meticulous legal detail, exactly what is being dismantled and why. Gerrymandering maps are being drawn right now specifically to dilute Black political power before the midterms. In the South, 56 percent of voters are Black. The people attacking democracy know exactly what they are doing.

Anti-racist means active. It means public. It means showing up where it is visible and where it costs you something. Attending a rally. Posting when your feed goes quiet. Calling a senator. Knocking a door. Funding the organizations doing the legal and organizing work right now.

History already told us how this works. In 1964, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner did not send a donation and move on. They drove to Mississippi. They worked. They died for it. Solidarity carries consequence. Symbolic solidarity carries none.

Choose consequence.

The Midterms Begin Now

Elections are not won on Election Day. They are won in the months of grinding, unglamorous work that comes before.

In the South, Black voters hold enormous power. They also face the most aggressive suppression machinery in the country. Getting people to the polls next year means starting registration drives now. It means building trust now. It means resources and boots on the ground now.

If you cannot be in Montgomery Saturday, invest in the infrastructure that turns out votes. Support Black Voters Matter directly. Plug into local chapters of the No Kings coalition. Volunteer with voter registration organizations in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and North Carolina. Make calls. Write postcards. Fund canvassers.

Power does not disappear when the rally ends. It compounds when we keep working after everyone else goes home.

Last night, powerful people hid. Journalists, lobbyists, and politicians dove under tables, pressed against walls, and ran for exits at the Washington Hilton. Secret Service moved. Protocols activated. And within hours, everyone went home.

Welcome to the reality American children, teachers, and parents live every single day. Except they do not get the protocols. They do not get the security detail. And not all of them get to go home.

They Felt It for Ninety Seconds

Joyce White Vance said what many of us were thinking: she listened to seasoned reporters describe their terror at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and immediately thought of America’s children. So did every parent who has ever kissed a kid goodbye at a school door and spent the day watching their phone.

Last night’s fear was real. Nobody dismisses that. But here is what last night was not: it was not hours. It was not silence so complete you could hear your own heartbeat. It was not crouching in a locked, darkened classroom for three hours while your phone dies and you cannot call your mother. It was not a teacher pressing her body against a door and telling twenty-three children to be very, very quiet.

That is a Tuesday in America.

What the Parents Were Doing

While everyone at the Washington Hilton ran for cover, they had something no parent of a child in an active shooter situation ever gets: real-time information. They could see. They could move. They knew where their people were.

Parents of children in school shootings wait. They wait outside yellow police tape, on sidewalks, in parking lots, refreshing news apps and texting into silence. They do not know if their child is hiding, injured, or gone. They stand there for hours, held back from the only thing that matters, not knowing if their family is still whole.

Last night lasted ninety seconds. That waiting lasts a lifetime.

What Teachers Actually Do

Let us be precise about what we ask of teachers in this country. We give them thirty students, a classroom, and in many states, a handgun training brochure. Then we tell them to be the last line of defense between a shooter and the children in their care.

Teachers run drills where weapons are pointed at them without warning, to simulate the real thing. They rehearse how to barricade a door with a desk, how to keep a child from screaming, how to triage a wound. They do this and then they teach fractions and read aloud and make sure every kid feels seen. They carry the weight home every night.

Last night, Washington felt a fraction of that weight for ninety seconds and called it terrifying. They were right. Now multiply it by every school day of every year, strip away the security detail, and imagine doing it without a panic button or a plan.

The Part Nobody Televises

Here is what cameras never follow: the child who cannot go back. The one who sits in the parking lot shaking on the first day of school the following year. The one who flinches at every locker slam, every car backfire, every fire drill. The one in therapy for years, learning to trust a building again.

Fred Guttenberg buried his daughter Jaime at Parkland and has spent every day since demanding accountability. “If you were horrified last night watching our elected leaders run and scramble because of gun violence,” he wrote, “just imagine how my daughter Jaime felt in school running from an active shooter before she was killed.”

The trauma does not end when the shooting stops. It moves in. It stays. It reshapes every ordinary moment of a child’s life into something that requires courage just to survive.

The Ballroom Excuse

Before the echo of last night’s gunshots faded, MAGA voices flooded X with a single message: this is why we need Trump’s ballroom. Tom Fitton. Jack Posobiec. Libs of TikTok. Meghan McCain. A coordinated chorus converting terror into a talking point for a $400 million vanity project that demolishes the historic East Wing of the White House.

Here is the fact they are counting on you not to know: the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is not a White House event. The White House Correspondents’ Association, an independent press organization, runs it every year at a hotel. A ballroom inside the White House perimeter would never host it. The excuse is not just weak. It is a lie dressed up as logic.

As Reverend Benjamin Cremer wrote: “I just can’t imagine wanting an entire secure ballroom for one man and not wanting gun reform for every child in America.”

Neither can we.

$400 Million and Not One Vote

The ballroom carries a $400 million price tag, financed through anonymous donors, halted by a federal judge, and championed by a party that has blocked every meaningful gun safety bill for two decades. Universal background checks. Red flag laws. Assault weapons restrictions. Safe storage requirements. All of it killed, filibustered, or never brought to a vote.

As of early 2026, the Gun Violence Archive had already counted 78 mass shootings in the year’s first weeks. Everytown for Gun Safety tracks gunfire on school grounds because it happens so often someone has to keep count. Gun violence remains the leading cause of death for American children. Not cancer. Not car accidents. Bullets.

One gilded room for one man. Not one vote for 4,400 children.

Be the Consequence

The movement that ends this will not come from Washington. It will come from you.
