Why is this an issue? You should have to show an ID to vote. Why is this a thing?

The SAVE ACT requires voters to prove they are citizens with a passport, birth certificate or naturalization papers. This is normal and necessary. It increase accountability and means a better democracy.

Incorrect.

The SAVE Act suppresses voters, especially women, Native Americans, and military personnel.

It’s a poll tax.

“This administration and its supporters in Congress want to silence American citizens in the streets and at the ballot box. That is why they have made this aggressive renewed push, supported by President Trump and Elon Musk, to pass the SAVE Act.

At a moment when the administration is escalating its attacks on democracy and manipulating elections out in the open, congressional Republicans voted to make it significantly harder for millions of citizens to hold politicians accountable and to force states to hand over their voter rolls to the Department of Homeland Security for screening.

More than 140 million Americans do not have a passport, and more than 69 million married women do not have a birth certificate that matches their legal name. Calling the SAVE Act a “voter ID” bill is a trick to make it more palatable to Americans; its core requirement for Americans to present citizenship documents to an election official in person will upend voter registration across the country and block Americans who do not have these documents from voting. ”

I can’t see it being a problem. For instance 69m married women don’t have ID? Then go to the local municipal hall and get ID. Simple. Only citizens should be able to vote. Period.

Jennifer Canter's avatar

It isn’t that simple. For example, my birth certificate doesn’t match my drivers license. My marriage certificate is from the U.S. Virgin Islands and I’ve experienced extreme difficulty getting a new DL in some states, like Florida, for that reason. Passports are approximately $189.

I’m unsure what makes this suppression. To me it seem like yes there are some hurdles for some people but if you want to vote it’s entirely possible to get anything you need before November. And if you’re worried about finances, there must be community groups who could help. It seem they help for everything else so why not this. I’m not convinced that having to show that you are American to vote is an issue. In fact this is pretty normal for that vast majority of countries around the world.

The Save Act 2.0

Let's call it what it is. GOP hates women voters bill.

Hi, my name is ______ and I’m a constituent from ______, ZIP code ______.

I’m calling to urge Representative ______ to vote NO on the SAVE Act 2.0, also known as the SAVE America Act.

This bill makes it harder for eligible citizens to register by requiring specific citizenship documents many people do not have readily available. It will disproportionately harm women who have changed their names, military families, Native voters, students, and low income Americans.

Citizenship is already required to vote. Non-citizen voting is exceedingly rare. This bill creates barriers instead of solving real problems.

Please protect our freedom to vote and oppose the SAVE Act 2.0.

Thank you.
