Welcome to our first Midweek Edition of Action Alerts!
By Abbi Lichtenstein
Here are ways you can take action this week to fight against the Trump administration’s illegal attacks against us and our government, and to protect our democracy.
Rallies/Take Action
Indivisible and coalition partners are organizing May Day National Day of Action on May 1. Join different events near you from peaceful assemblies to workers demanding a country that puts our families over billionaires, public education over private profits, health care over hedge funds, and more!
Take Action to Defend Federal Services and Workers by joining the Federal Unionist Network to get alerts about local protests and stand up to Musk and Trump’s attacks on public services and workers. Please sign up here.
Young people today are already grappling with overwhelming challenges—from gun violence to the climate crisis. As if that weren’t enough, the Trump administration, the Republicans in Congress, and lawmakers in state legislatures are working to suppress honest education. They’re passing laws that criminalize teaching the truth about our history and restricting students from asking questions or thinking critically. Now more than ever, we must take a stand. Students deserve to learn the full, unfiltered truth about our past. That’s why the Zinn Education Project is organizing a Teach the Truth Day of Action on June 7—a powerful, public stand in defense of honest history. Join here to learn how you can get involved and help defend the right to learn the truth.
Find a list and maps of protests nationwide, which corps to boycott, volunteer opportunities to stop the SAVE Act, and much more! You can also find a rally near you here.
Town Halls
Here is information on People’s Town Halls that you can attend in person. Town halls give you an opportunity to connect with neighbors, community leaders, and organizations and discuss the issues that are important to you.
Phone Bank and Canvassing Opportunities
Please join a virtual phone bank for Democrats to call North Carolina voters. It’s an opportunity to build power for the Democrats so we can flip North Carolina blue!
Canvass for Democrats and talk with voters in North Carolina in various counties. This is also a great opportunity to help flip North Carolina blue!
Grassroots Democrats, in partnership with the California Democrats, Team Pelosi, and the Los Angeles Democratic Party, are hosting the #HandsOff our Health Care Phone Banks on various dates. Fifteen million Californians and 72 million Americans rely on Medicaid to get the care they need. They are mobilizing constituents in three battleground districts to fight against the Republicans who are attacking our health care. Please sign up here to join.
The SAVE Act, a GOP bill to make voter registration much more difficult and expensive in order to fix the non-existent issue of non-citizen voting, passed in the House before the break. However, we can stop it in the Senate if the Democrats stick together. Please join Common Cause who is hosting phone banks on April 24 at 6 PM ET and April 29 at 5 PM ET—plus more dates you can sign up for. You will be patching people in key states through to their senators so they can share their outrage and vote against this bill.
Other Actions
The Save Act, if passed in the Senate, will require voters to show a certified birth certificate or a passport to register or re-register to vote. If your name is different than what is shown on these two documents, you will not be able to register and therefore, not be able to vote. This is a voter suppression bill and is a direct attack on women who changed their names when they got married, and also for transgender voters who changed their names. On April 30, with the help of lawyers and notaries, residents in Lucas County, and surrounding counties in Ohio, you can receive help with name changes and correcting your birth certificate.
Sign up for the Rural Democratic Leaders Zoom call on April 26 from noon–4 PM ET. Hosted by RuralOrganizing.org, this event will bring together rural civic leaders, rural organizers, rural influencers, and Rural Democrats to develop concrete strategies for opposing Donald Trump and Elon Musk's take-over of our government and outline specific action steps we all can take at the local level to rebuild the Democratic Party from the bottom up.
Swing Left San Gabriel Valley and Swing Left Inland Valley are co-hosting a fundraiser for the victims of the Eaton Fire in CA. It's called "Help Our Neighbors Heal: A Teach-In and Fundraiser for Eaton Fire Survivors." The event will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2–4 PM PT. Hear from survivors of the fire and learn the rich history of Black Community in Altadena. Please consider donating to victims of the Eaton Fire.
