Welcome to our May 17 edition of our partner newsletter!
“So far, the most energetic opposition has come not from civic leaders but from everyday citizens, showing up at congressional town hall meetings or participating in Hands Off rallies across the country. Our leaders must follow their example.” — Steven Levitsky, Lucan Way and Daniel Ziblatt, NYT

Joe Katz at Rogan’s List shared tools and talking points for writing letters to the editor to oppose MAGA’s budget, plus more ways to stop the Medicaid cuts.
“The MAGA murder budget would be the largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in a single law in U.S. history (check out summaries from the Center for American Progress and the Progressive Caucus). And House Republicans are struggling with each other to make it even worse, with so-called moderates fighting for more tax cuts for high-income families and the Freedom Caucus angry that they’re not kicking even more than 8.6 million low-income folks off Medicaid. Right now, it’s not clear they have enough votes to make it through the Budget Committee. This is an opportunity we have to take advantage of.
We can speak out against this by writing letters to our local editors pushing back, and Moms Rising is here to help us. We can look here to find sample talking points and all the tools we need to write a strong letter to the editor protesting the GOP’s cruel, deep cuts to Medicaid.”

Indivisible Westchester is alerting everyone: Know Your Rights.
Last week, “federal officials arrested Newark’s mayor, Ras Baraka, outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility. They’ve threatened to arrest three members of Congress who were present as well, while the White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller threatened to suspend habeas corpus altogether. As ICE raids across the country intensify, it's important to know your rights.”

Democracy Labs posted this article: Republicans cut the cost of gun silencers: Mapping gun lobby donations and mass shootings.
Why would Republicans make gun silencers more affordable when there is a gun violence epidemic in this country?
Deepak includes a link to a StoryMap that visualizes gun lobby donations and mass shootings data from OpenSecrets and the Gun Violence Archive.
Call your Republican reps and tell them: Reduce gun violence — not the cost of guns and silencers.

House GOP Set to Cut Critical Health Care and Food Assistance Programs
With Donald Trump’s blessing, House Republicans are pushing a budget that includes one of the largest cuts to health care and food assistance in American history — showing once more that the GOP’s priority will always be Trump’s billionaire backers, not working families.
Medicaid and SNAP are vital programs that millions of Americans rely on for quality, affordable health care and to put food on the table. Republicans need to wake up and realize that they can’t drastically cut those programs without consequences. It is their vote or their seat.
Republicans can try to spin this all they want — this is not a moderate bill.
According to the CBO, Republicans’ reconciliation package will cut health care spending by $715 billion over a decade. All in all, the GOP bill will result in nearly 14 million Americans going uninsured.
Hospitals will close, seniors will not be able to get the care they need, and premiums will skyrocket for everyday families.
Trump is showing us whose side he’s on: He’s not fighting for children, parents, seniors in nursing homes, or people with disabilities – he’s gutting programs Americans rely on to give handouts to the ultra wealthy.
Only four Republicans need to grow a spine and join Democrats to protect these critical programs. If they don’t, they’ll face the consequences in the midterms.
Post on social media.

DemCast is proud to partner with groups around the country for the NO KINGS National Day of Mobilization.
On June 14—Flag Day—Donald Trump wants tanks in the street and a made-for-TV display of dominance for his birthday. A spectacle meant to look like strength. But real power isn’t staged in Washington. It rises up everywhere else.
NO KINGS is a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to the increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption of the Trump administration
