Six to six. On Oct. 20, the Memphis City Council deadlocked on an 18-month data center moratorium. One member was absent. One vote would have changed it.
Two weeks earlier, residents had packed City Hall until the meeting collapsed into shouting, a fistfight and calls to police. They showed up. They begged. Then a single seat decided it.
The council did pass a 135-day pause. That buys a few months to study what neighbors near Elon Musk’s xAI have lived with for two years.
Meanwhile, Trump’s Justice Department tried to kill the NAACP’s Clean Air Act lawsuit over the gas plant feeding xAI’s Colossus 2. A federal judge refused to dismiss the case. The government still got a seat at the table.
Your government showed up in court for a billionaire.
The bill lands on your side
A Dallas Fed paper, revised Oct. 9, estimates data centers had raised national wholesale electricity prices 6.9% by 2025. That measures the market price of power, not your exact bill. It’s the pressure behind your bill.
Americans noticed. Pew found 54% now call data centers mostly bad for the environment, up from 39% in January.
Your vote picks who writes the rules
Moratoriums, water limits and who pays for grid upgrades get decided by city councils, state legislatures and Congress. Those seats are on your ballot.
In Tennessee’s 9th District, Democrat Justin J. Pearson backs a moratorium. Republican Brent Taylor sponsored the law letting data centers run private power plants with no state oversight. Memphis voters get to answer that in 13 days.
Wherever you live, look up your local, state and federal candidates. Ask where each one stands on data center costs, water and air. Then vote like your power bill depends on it.
The fight against data centers is erupting everywhere — and right now, we’re flooding every feed in America with it. The message every politician needs to hear: we do not want data centers.
