We’re Losing to MAGA Online

There’s no pretty way to say this: we’re losing the information war. Post-election analyses by Navigator and other groups show that swing voters disproportionately get their news from alternative media sources and social media.

Much has been said about the need for the left to build up alternative media to circumvent an increasingly irrelevant mainstream media. Yes. We need more podcasters and streamers relaying news with pro-democracy, pro-working-class framing across the internet.

But the piece of infrastructure that everyone is ignoring in this conversation is what we at DemCast call the Digital Field Team.

The MAGA movement has hundreds of thousands of social media accounts that coordinate together to spread Trump’s disinformation and right-wing media clips across social media. (The MAGA troll army.)

DemCast is the only organized answer to that on the left.

But folks have been asking HOW we go about this work.

The Short Version

DemCast curates content and messaging from across the movement. Then we recruit, train & deploy social media users to spread those talking points, videos, graphics and memes.

Strategies like algorithmic boosting, disruptive commenting and social media swarms are highly effective strategies, but they can’t be deployed via paid digital ads or influencers because they require a high volume of posts to be effective.

I’ll aim to post individual breakdowns of each of these strategies & why we use them in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.
