I just subscribed and have some additional thoughts. Many of you may not agree with me, but hear me out. Since I live in an area of Pennsylvania that should have gone blue, but didn't, I have been talking to and observing people. Most red voters in this area are not big on social media and in fact, are afraid of it. Fox and some right wing radio stations are the primary source of information. We need to develop a plan to get to those people. They are proud, consider themselves loyal Americans while responding to the fears that are constantly thrown at them. What is a good counter strategy for these folks?
No doubt. We aren't claiming to have the end-all, be-all answer to our communications problems. But our side is getting dramatically out-posted and out-amplified online. If we leave them the battlefield without fighting back, we're ceding that territory. That's not acceptable. Our lane at DemCast is helping to close the gap in terms of volume/quality of social media posts. If folks want to work on a different piece of the puzzle, we applaud that too.
I agree. Liberals/progressives spent too much time on social media. It's not a format that is good for educating voters about the issues. I have a post on the works with suggestions for a better strategy.
This sounds great. Will this be available for replay? Maybe choose different days and times for those of us that aren't able to make it during your scheduled times on Mondays.
I want to be part of this but I can’t attend the call live due to my work schedule. Will the call be recorded or can I get the info in a different way?
What I think progressives need to do is get channels added to cable TV. The right wingers have Faux News, Newsmax, and OAN. What do progressives have? Not much I can think of. TYT is on YTTV, but nothing else.
Television no longer has the reach. The present and future are on social media and I have never been a fan of social media until now, I say begrudgingly. Check out MeidasTouch on YouTube. It’s got more traffic than Joe Rogan and they don’t lie. They are part of the solution.
I’m interested, but also wary. It’s not enough to amplify by reposting Democratic talking points and messaging. We also need to do a better job of job of actively and persuasively engaging with people who disagree with us. What’s your plan in this regard?
See my Substack. I have a game plan on this that I'm rolling out. In the meantime you can see what I have posted.
This time around, the focus has to be heavy in educating people about the issues and then helping them understand which party matches which solution. Also gotta push the Democratic party to change strategy .. gotta focus on state and local.
Happy to assist but amplification is part of the problem IMO. Platform is another. The Dem's future is progressive that has been made clear. If we just want to amplify Pelosian style Democrat strategy, that ain't gonna fly.
As I’ve said a number of times in the past several weeks, we lost the election because the right wing media complex convinced a bunch of racist, misogynistic white and latino men of an alternate reality that caused them to vote against their own self interests. I’m not sure what to say about the women who voted for Trump.
It was like a criminal convincing his victim that the police were the cause of their problems and that the solution was to get rid of the police department so that the criminal could make things right.
We have our work cut out for us. We can do this, but to succeed we will need everyone on board. Now is the time to overcome the advantage that the right wing social media mob has over us.
I'm putting a piece together that talks about a better messaging strategy.
Also Dems need to get their act together. When I wrote my Democratic state and local government officials last January a detailed issue brief with recommendations for changes in landlord-tenant law, they should have jumped on it since about 5o percent of their constituents are renters. None of them could be bothered to even acknowledge my message let alone lift a finger to change the horrible laws in Texas. So some people need to be gone!
I think we need both/and solutions. Of course we need to generously fund and develop sustained relationships at the local and regional level in all 50 states. Yes, it’s true that not everyone gets their news from social media. But many people, maybe even most people at this point, certainly do. They respond to quick hitting, simple, often enough simplistic, emotionally charged messaging. This kind of messaging gains traction and spreads easily. Because it reaches so many people, it creates a movement effect. It makes people feel as if they are part of something big, an identity that is echoed over and over again. The right is doing this with lies. We need to do it truthfully. And what we do on the ground needs to mirror what we say in the social media sphere. This will create a force multiplier effect. The right is already doing this and lapping us at it furthermore. We need to respond and soon if we want to turn this around.
I’m looking forward to using social media to amplify Democratic messaging, especially sharing podcasts and other kinds of things that aren’t social media. It will get re-shared and people will see this stuff filter through their social media platforms. I’m on hiatus from Facebook, for example, but I know that my friends are sharing political messaging from TikTok and other places onto Facebook, so these messages will filter out into the world.

If you sign up we’ll send the recording. And there will be more opportunities to plug in.
On the West coast and will be working but this would be great.

No worries Marie. We’ll be sharing the info via the Digital Drumbeat.
Thank you!

It's multi-faceted. And "amplifying and reposting Democratic talking points" is not what we're aiming to do. That's a dead end.
Then count me in!

Exactly. Thx Quin.
