Experts have been busy throughout 2023 and 2024 testing messages with key blocs of voters who are crucial to victory this November. Some messages work better than others at persuading and mobilizing.
At DemCast, we keep an eye on the groups testing political messages, and we incorporate what we learn into our guidance and toolkits.
On today’s briefing, we’ll walk through some of the latest guidance. Join us if you can! Even if you can’t make it today, sign up at the link below to register for the Democracy Briefing webinar series, and to receive meeting recordings.
FYI: Memo from the White House re: Corporate Price Gouging
Today, WH Senior Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates released a memo aimed at helping allies fight back against right wing disinformation about inflation and the Biden economy.
Here’s the memo, with some talking points we can deploy online and in our networks:
RE: As President Biden fights against corporate price gouging, MAGAnomics sides with it
To: Allies and interested parties
From: Senior Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates
Date: 5/20/2024
President Biden’s top economic priorities are fighting inflation and lowering costs for the
American people. Standing up to corporate price gouging is at the core of that fight.
As major corporations, many seeing record profits, overcharge the American people – in some cases keeping prices elevated despite inflation falling – President Biden is taking unprecedented action to deliver relief for middle class families.
But rich special interests are pushing back to protect their abuses and junk fees, including by suing the Biden-Harris Administration – often with the support of Republican officials who believe in MAGAnomics.
Big Pharma
After President Biden beat Big Pharma and gave Medicare the power to negotiate lower drug costs, Big Pharma is suing to keep drug costs high – with the support of Republican leaders.
Grocery Chains
President Biden is calling on grocery corporations making record profits to finally pass savings onto consumers, which congressional Republicans have attacked him for.
Credit Card Companies
Under President Biden, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is cracking down on credit card late fees – to save families $10 billion each year. But credit card companies are suing to stop those savings from reaching families, with support from Republican officials. And every month the rule is blocked will cost Americans over $800 million.
Airlines
The Biden Administration moved to save Americans over half a billion dollars that they are currently overpaying in surprise airline fees. Now airlines are suing to prevent families from benefiting. Meanwhile, airlines brought in $5.5 billion in bag fees alone in 2023
Student debt
As President Biden has done more than all previous presidents combined to achieve student debt relief for borrowers, Republican attorneys general are fighting tooth and nail on behalf of creditors.
President Biden is working every day to build an economy founded on a strong, growing middle class — one that works from the bottom-up and the middle-out, not the top down.
Every day, the President fights for hardworking families on Main Street, which is why he’s calling out corporate interests who are overcharging Americans.
It’s also why he’s pushing to make the wealthiest households and corporations pay their fair share, cut taxes for the middle class, and enable Medicare to negotiate down the price of even more drugs.
By contrast, proponents of MAGAnomics want tax welfare for billionaires and big companies, tax hikes on working people, and no penalties for price gouging. All as top economists warn that MAGAnomics would set off an “inflation bomb” and an “inflation spiral.”
