Talking Points: Hot Off The Press!

Talking Points: Trump’s SCOTUS Hearing
Here are some priority talking points to share following yesterday’s hearing, from the Defend Democracy Project:
There was no reason for the Supreme Court to hear Trump's appeal, other than to purposely postpone the January 6 federal trial.
If the Supreme Court had not taken the appeal, we would be eight weeks into the January 6 federal trial and nearing a verdict.
Because they took this appeal, a trial will, at best, have to take place at the height of the campaign season, which will politicize it even further.
This hearing is not just about Trump. There is a significantly wider context. The long-term Federalist Society project, to which the majority of justices belong, is to make the Supreme Court into the dominant policy-making branch of government, without any form of democratic accountability.
Justice Thomas will soon be 80. Justice Alito will be 78. Justice Sotomayor is in ill health. The Court’s future hangs in the balance. A second Trump term would have enormous implications for the Federalist Society project. It could seal a victory for the Federalist Society movement for a generation. This would be the case for the federal judiciary as well as SCOTUS.
The Court’s actions are actually more egregiously anti-democratic than Bush v. Gore. By the time that SCOTUS heard Bush v. Gore, the country was in crisis. There was no consensus about what to do next. That isn't the case now. In this instance, the justices have created a crisis where none existed by choosing to halt one of the important trials in the history of the United States.
Next Week is a Reproductive Freedom Week Of Action!
The Biden-Harris Campaign has declared a Week of Action next week (4/27-5/4) on abortion.
They’re asking folks to post all week about the importance of this issue across social media.
Some of their suggested baseline posts to work from:
I remember where I was when the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe leaked. I’m going to remember that feeling in November when we defeat Donald Trump.
It’s been nearly two years since Donald Trump overturned Roe v. Wade. Now, more than 1 in 3 women of reproductive age live under an abortion ban in effect. This November, we vote to restore our reproductive freedom.
Reproductive health care decisions belong to women and their doctors – it’s that simple. That’s why I’m voting for Biden-Harris.
Trump overturned Roe. He brags about it. And he will ban abortion nationwide if he makes his way back to the White House.
This November, the choice is clear: while Trump and MAGA Republicans are working to ban abortion nationwide, President Biden and Vice President Harris will never stop fighting to protect reproductive freedom.

Navigator Research Insights:
Some new polling from Navigator research offers some insights:
Republicans remain EXTREMELY unpopular (Net -31 approval). ;-)
When talking about the slash-and-burn agenda of Republicans, cuts to veterans’ benefits and to health care are key among voters’ concerns. (And they really don’t like all those tax cuts for billionaires.)
The Upshot: Continue to pound Republicans online on these key issues that have swayed Independents and moved these (dis)approval numbers over the last month.
