This Pivotal Moment

In Sci-Fi comics, books & movies, alternate realities can branch off creating parallel universes. Single decisions and actions can have “butterfly effect”, far-reaching consequences that are very hard to predict or fathom at the time they’re made.

We may be at one of those pivotal moments.

It’s well documented that artificial intelligence poses risks to our safety - and not just in Sci-Fi movies. As we see deepfakes proliferate online and AI automation transform entire industries, it’s clear the development of this technology is moving extremely fast.

Recently, one of the largest AI companies - Open AI - raised risk levels for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats with their latest model.

The Good News: There is a bill to regulate AI companies - SB 1047 - that passed the California state legislature and is currently sitting on Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk.
The bill is supported by two of the most preeminent AI scientists on the planet, along with dozens of others within the industry, major unions like SEIU & SAG-AFTRA, and large advocacy organizations like the National Organization of Women.

The Bad News: Newsom hasn’t signed it. Yet. He’s under extraordinary pressure from Big Tech companies to veto the bill. If he does veto it, the consequences could be catastrophic in ways we can’t even fathom.

We don’t want to enter the dark timeline here.
