The Enemy of the Press

For authoritarian regimes to succeed, they need to squelch the free press. They need to ensure that media agencies are too afraid to report the truth.

One way of doing this is by monitoring and intimidating reporters directly. Trump showed in his first term that he’s willing to weaponize DOJ against reporters who threaten him.

Another way is by bullying media agencies themselves so that they steer editorial decisions away from reporting that could provoke backlash from a despot.

Trump is clearly bullying media agencies, suing for $10+ billion, claiming libelous reporting. Given the hard-right lean of the courts during the first Trump Administration, and the likely acceleration of that pattern in his second term, it’s going to be enough to at least give these for-profit companies pause.

That’s why it is SO important in this moment to support independent media and alternative distribution channels that don’t rely on traditional media.
