Donald Trump is once again testing authoritarian tactics—this time threatening to gut vote-by-mail, restrict state elections, and silence millions of Americans. His goal is simple: seize power and put himself above the law. The freedom to vote is the foundation of every other freedom, and we must defend it.

What you need to know:

• Trump is using authoritarian tactics to spread fear and chaos, aiming to seize permanent power and silence marginalized communities, including Black, Brown, rural, young, seniors, people with disabilities, and working-class Americans.

• His proposed Executive Order would eliminate vote-by-mail, impose federally approved voting machines, and increase federal oversight of state elections, adding new hurdles for voters and restricting access to the ballot.

• This power grab is a direct attack on the freedom to vote, which is the foundation of every other freedom. If successful, it would allow one man to be above the law and undermine the will of the people.

• The American people want safe, fair, and accessible elections, not a dictatorship. Our elections already have rigorous checks and balances to ensure they are safe and that every vote is counted.

• Although Trump has temporarily backed off his threat of an executive order, the threat remains, and we must remain vigilant in defending the right of every voter to be heard.
