The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been an unqualified success. Since its creation in 2014, it has won $21 billion in relief for tens of millions of consumers in the form of financial restitution and cancelled debts while providing a much-needed check on out-of-control financial institutions.

And it has solved many, many problems through its consumer complaint system:

• Medical Debt. The CFPB helped a single mother of five in Florida eliminate $1,386 in unjust medical debt

• Overdraft. A retiree overdrew a checking account by just a few dollars and got saddled with $158 in predatory bank fees until CFPB intervened.

• Runarounds. The CFPB helped a New Jersey consumer challenge false past-due notices from Synchrony Bank and won $225 million in consumer relief from the bank.

This institution is hear to protect the little guy.

The Trump administration, with Elon Musk’s DOGE bros at the forefront, have begun to destroy CFPB - first by secreting themselves away in basement conference rooms with access to computer systems. Then by sending all employees home, then ordering them to cease work entirely. A first wave of mass firings has already occurred. More purges seem likely if the courts don’t put a permanent stop to this madness.

YOUR stories are power that we can use to make clear that there’s a political price to be paid if elected officials don’t stand up and #DefendCFPB.
